Damaged screens can be a problem!

The other day we were cleaning the windows on a house in Ogden. The home owner asked me to take a look at her screens and assess them for damages. As I took a look, I realized that much of the mesh on many of the screens had been frayed from the sun and had become very weak, resulting in tears and rips.
Screens serve a very important purpose for our homes and windows, but, if they are broken, damaged, or torn they can be very ineffective. Screens keep bugs out, provide a breeze to enter on a nice day without allowing other unwanted things in, and can protect your windows from harsh weather and other outdoor threats.
In cases of damaged screens it is very important that the screens be repaired so that they can function properly and serve the purpose that they are intended for.
I told the home owner that we would take the damaged screens back to our office and repair them for her. She was relieved that we were able to do this, and that she would receive new screens that would give her home a newer look, and provide the protection her family needs.

Rain! Rain! Rain! When do I clean my windows?

We have had some very interesting weather the last couple of months. At times it seems like summer just does not want to get here. My brother asked me yesterday if I could send one of my crews up to take care of all the windows in his house inside and out. I asked him when he would like them to come. He said “when it stops raining.” I said that will never happen. There will always be a rain storm coming sometime in the near future and most of the time it is within the next two weeks.

Here at Squeaky Clean Windows we know that most people think, if I get my windows cleaned it is bound to rain the next day or so. That is why we have a rain guarantee policy. Our policy will vary based on what the customer needs from us as far as the initial cleaning. For more information on how these work go to our web page on rain policies. We feel that this is one way we can make sure our customer’s money is well spent and they are very well taken care of. As far as my brother he is going to have his windows done right after the next rain storm and if it rains again in the next two weeks, we will just come up and take care of the outside windows again! He really likes that idea and feels good about it. We hope all of you feel good about how we take care of you as well.  If you have any questions about any of our policies or programs please call us at 801-645-7745 or 435-216-3141

Hard Water Build-Up On Windows?

I had a question today from someone I doing an estimate for.  She asked me why her windows keep getting this white film on them.  She had this film on the high up windows that the sprinklers could not reach also.  She was mind boggled about this and what it was.  I asked her if she ever cleans her house with the hose.  She said she does that once or twice a year to get the siding clean.  I said “Well that is your problem.  You are putting the same water on your high up windows and the rest of the house as the sprinklers is to your lower windows.”  She was amazed that she never made the connection.  Most people don’t realize that they do this when they clean the house off with a hose.  It is best to wash your house down with the right equipment and with the right solutions to avoid creating other problems.  If all else false call us and we can come out and clean those windows up and make them sparkle.  We had another situation like this last month in while washing windows in Bountiful.  Window cleaning is our specialty and whether you are in Ogden, Layton, Salt Lake City, or even St. George Utah we can come and take care of your windows for you.  Feel free to tell me if you have ever had this or something similar to this situation happen to you.

Cleaning with Vinegar

Because of its high levels of acid, white distilled vinegar can be used as an effective household cleaner.  Many people don’t know it, but vinegar is effective in killing most mold, bacteria, and germs.  Vinegar is a great alternative to using harsh chemicals, and is also environmentally friendly and very economical.

Try these household tips using vinegar:

Clean counter tops- Use a cloth soaked in undiluted white distilled vinegar to make your counter tops shine.

Clean the microwave- Mix 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar and 1/2 cup water in a microwave-safe bowl. Bring it to a rolling boil inside the microwave. Baked-on food will be loosened, and odors will disappear. To finish, simply wipe clean.

Clean a grease splattered oven door window- Saturate it with full-strength white distilled vinegar. Keep the door open for 10 to 15 minutes before wiping with a sponge.

Remove soap buildup and odors from the dishwasher- Pour a cup of white distilled vinegar inside the empty machine and run it through a whole cycle.

Easily clean your mini blinds- Wear a pair of white cotton gloves.  Dip gloved fingers into a solution of equal parts white vinegar and warm tap water, and run your fingers across both sides of each blind.

Discourage ants- Spray undiluted white distilled vinegar outside doorways and windowsills, around appliances and wherever you find the pests coming in.

Renew sponges and dishrags- Place sponges and dishrags in just enough water to cover them. Add 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar. Let them soak overnight.

Kill germs all around the bathroom- Spray full-strength white distilled vinegar. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Remove grime, mildew, and scum- Wipe with undiluted white distilled vinegar, then rinse with water.

To make the toilet bowl sparkle- Pour in a cup or more of diluted white distilled vinegar and let it sit several hours or overnight. Scrub well with the toilet brush and flush.

Freshen air in the bathroom- Spray 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon white distilled vinegar, and 1 cup water into the air for a fresh new bathroom.

I’m sure that these tips will come in handy, and make your life much easier.  Let us know how they work for you!

Cleaning window tracks… Is it really that Important?

Clean Window Track

When we are out on jobs a question that we are commonly asked is if it’s important to get the window tracks cleaned.  I always share with them stories of people who didn’t maintain their tracks and the damage it causes from the build-up of dirt combined with the heat of the sun.  What most people don’t realize is the effects the sun has on the vinyl tracks.  Vinyl expands and contracts with the heat that builds up, essentially baking the dirt and grime that has built up over time into the track.  At this point it is nearly impossible to get all the dirt off the vinyl track.  For this reason we suggest getting your tracks cleaned once a year, in the spring time.  This way your tracks are cleaner for the summer months when the sun is high and the temperatures are the hottest.  This is all part of maintaining the windows in your home and preserving the value of possibly your largest investment, your home.

Cleaning With Bleach

It’s no secret to anyone that knows me…I LOVE BLEACH!! It is my favorite cleaning product on the planet!  Whether it’s a cup in my towels when I wash them to brighten them up and give them that fresh, clean smell (I buy all white towels now!) or Clorox Kleen-Up on my kitchen and bathroom surfaces to kill germs and brighten up the atmosphere and make it all smell so clean and fresh! It is amazing stuff!

I have a friend that always seems to have a clean house. No matter when I walk in, her home has a clean, well-kept feel. When my kids were much younger, it seemed impossible to keep the place clean, much less, presentable! I asked her how she does it. She told me her “little secret”. First thing in the morning and then again in the afternoon before her husband comes home from work, she takes a quick vacuum to the entryway of both front and back doors. She wipes the little smudges off the glass on the entryway doors. Then she gives a quick shot of Clorox Kleen-Up to her kitchen sink and the countertop to freshen them up.  All in all, she spends 10 – 15 minutes to freshen up the areas first seen when you walk in so it appears she has been cleaning all day!  The smell of bleach automatically makes you think “clean”.

Now that my kids are much older, I find myself missing those little finger smudges all over my windows and their crayon-colored pictures covering my white fridge. But I love it when they come in and can smell my bleach and say, “Mmmm…momma’s been cleaning!”

Steel Wool… A Window Cleaners Secret

Maintaining your windows on the inside can be simple if you have the right tools and knowledge.  We all know that once you have your windows cleaned by a professional, they are perfect.  And it never seems to fail that once they are cleaned, little kids are attracted to them with sticky fingers from peanut butter and jelly! Dirty fingers are attracted to clean windows.  Your first reaction is to get some window cleaner and a towel but no matter how hard you try, your efforts never get the results a professional can provide.

Here is a secret…

STEEL WOOL

Once you get the peanut butter and jelly off the window, streaky residue is left behind and seems impossible to remove.  Simply buff the area with a dry wad of steel wool.  This will get rid of the streaky residue and give you the closest results to a professional cleaning.   This is great for small touch ups around the house and holds you over until your next professional window cleaning.  Good luck and please let me know how this works for you!

Winter Time Window Cleaning

Many ask us if we clean windows in the winter time.  Is cleaning windows in the winter time a good idea or even possible?  Of course it is.  Winter is one of the best times to get your windows cleaned.  The windows will stay clean longer than throughout any other time of the year.  Let me tell you why.  Take a look around your house.  The snow covers the ground and all the dirt.  Most of the city is this way.  During the summer the dirt kicked up in the air mixed with a little moisture from a small cloud can really cause a mess on your windows, house and car.  Winter allows the snow to cover most of the dust that would be in the air.  With no dust in the air to mix with the moisture snow and sleet just slide off the windows and leaves them clean.  So; not only is window cleaning in the winter time possible but it is a very good idea.

Christmas Lights! LED vs. Incandescent

Everybody wants thier Christmas lights up all at the same time.  This is the crazy time of the year for all of us.  I would like to tell you about a few things to look for when choosing your Christmas lights.  There are the options of going LED or just the good old incodescent bulbs.  Led is suppose to be a better way to go when it comes to conserving power.  The reality of it is, it takes about 14 years on the average to break even.  Most people dont do the math properly and dont really know how much money LED is going to save them.  If you take the regular incodescent bulb at 7 watts a bulb verses an LED that “lets say” saves you 90% of your power consumption.

Consider you have about 200 feet of lights on your house.  At 7 watts per foot you have 1400 watts of electricity.  The power company usually, in Ogden Utah, charges about $.08 per kilawatt hour.  1400 devided by 1000 is 1.4…  multiplied by the cost per hour of $.08 is $.112.  If you followed the math properly it is going to cost about 12 cents per hour to have your Christmas lights on.  If you multiply the cost per hour by 6 hours a day and 30 days you come up with $21.60 for the Christmas season to have your christmas lights on.  The cost for LED light is going to run about $1.50 per bulb.  Multiplied by 200 feet and we get $300.00.  Now if we would like to know when we start saving money in electricity we devide $300.00 by $21.60.  Our answer is 13.88 years.  This is how many years it will take in order to start saving money by using LED lights.  The two things that may change from these numbers are how much the power company in your area charges and how much you are paying for your LED lights.
